I’ve recently been away for a few days and hadn’t connected to the internet so wasn’t aware of the news story of the dad who had used YouTube to help deliver his baby son.  Basically he’d watched the videos as a precaution when his wife had started to feel discomfort but little did he know that the knowledge he’d gained would actually deliver his son.

So this got me thinking, if an instructional video on YouTube can be used to help someone deliver a baby where does the power of the internet stop?

small_light_bulb_web_130x981It may seem obvious that technology can impact a business but how many businesses actually assess what impact poor or failing technology has cost their business. Without wishing to be controversial I’d estimate that less than 1% of SMEs understand the financial impact.  Technology can be a fantastic enabler but it can equally be a train on costs without you even noticing.

I came across the following on a website called SmallBizod and it demonstrates the point very well.  A link to the full article can be found at the end of this posting.

Great news for Home businesses…..why does this kind of thing not get reported by the media?

Enterprise Nation claim 90% of home businesses are making expansion plans despite the UKs financial challenges.  57% are planning to extend their product/service and 30% are the_sky_is_the_limit_profit_150x94planning to work partnership with other businesses.  It may not be a massive figure but 7% plan on hiring extra staff or outsourcing work to help with their growth.

For home businesses it’s important that they don’t simply launch their growth plans without making sure that they have key foundations in place.  Even if they’re already in place they should be reviewed to ensure they can cope with the growth – if not make sure they’re changed otherwise they could undermine growth.

Two areas worth considering are data and outsourcing.
